If you're a pilot or aspiring to become one, you're likely familiar with the importance of FAA physicals. These medical exams are crucial for ensuring the safety of both pilots and passengers. In this guide, we’ll break down what FAA physicals are, the different classes, who can perform these exams, how often they need to be completed, and how long they typically take. We’ll also cover HIMS exams and explain why WorkersFirst Clinics are the best choice for your FAA physical.
FAA physicals are medical examinations required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for pilots to ensure they meet the health standards necessary to operate an aircraft safely. These exams assess various aspects of a pilot's health, including vision, hearing, cardiovascular fitness, and overall physical and mental condition.
There are three classes of FAA physicals, each with specific requirements and validity periods:
First-Class Medical Certificate Validity
12 months for pilots under 40; 6 months for pilots 40 and older.
Required For: Commercial pilots and Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)
Includes: Detailed cardiovascular assessment, vision and hearing tests, general physical exam.
Second-Class Medical Certificate Validity
12 months for all ages.
Required For: Commercial pilots and ATP not flying in Captain (Pilot in Command) position.
Includes: Vision and hearing tests, general physical exam.
Third-Class Medical Certificate Validity
Required For: Private pilots.
Includes: Vision and hearing tests, general physical exam.
60 months for pilots under 40; 24 months for pilots 40 and older
HIMS (Human Intervention Motivation Study) exams are a specialized subset of FAA physicals designed for pilots with certain medical conditions, such as substance abuse or dependence, who require special issuance medical certification. These exams are conducted by HIMS-trained Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) and include additional assessments and monitoring to ensure the pilot's health and safety.
Initial Assessment: Comprehensive evaluation of the pilot's medical history, including substance use.
Ongoing Monitoring: Regular follow-up exams and reporting to ensure compliance and health stability.
Specialized Testing: May include psychological evaluations by a HIMS psychiatrist, lab tests, and other
diagnostic procedures.
Fit for duty testing is required for employees in safety-sensitive positions, including but not limited to:
Pilots requiring a special issuance medical certificate due to medical conditions that impact their ability to fly safely.
FAA and HIMS physicals must be conducted by FAA-authorized Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs). At WorkersFirst Clinics, we are proud to have a certified AME on staff who is trained to perform FAA exams, ensuring that you receive the highest quality care and expertise.
The frequency of FAA physicals depends on the class of the medical certificate:
First-Class: Every 6-12 months.
Second-Class: Every 12 months.
Third-Class: Every 24-60 months.
HIMS Exams: Frequency varies based on individual pilot's condition and FAA requirements.
The duration of an FAA physical can vary depending on the class of the medical certificate and the individual pilot's health. Typically, the examination takes between 30 minutes to an hour. HIMS exams may take longer due to the additional assessments and documentation required.
